Living For Others

What does it mean to live the Christian life? What does it mean to honor Jesus? The apostle Paul gave us a good summary of how to live for Christ in Philippians 2.

Paul wrote, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too” (Philippians 2:3). Paul is encouraging us to think of others.

Jesus Christ lived for others. He left heaven and came to earth, for others. He spent His life helping others.. healing others… Jesus died on the cross for others. If we are to be followers of Christ, we should strive to live for others.

But this is challenge for us. We are all human and we come into the world as selfish people. We have to ask the Lord to help us consider others. For most people, it doesn’t come natural.

The great psychiatrist, Karl Menninger once gave a lecture and following the lecture someone asked him if an individual felt they were about to have a nervous breakdown, what should they do? Everyone expected Menninger to say, “See a psychiatrist.” Instead, he said, “Leave your house, find someone in need, and do something to help that person.”

“Others Lord, yes others,

Let that my motto be.

Help me to live for others,

That I might live like Thee.”
