Years ago, I was talking with a Pastor-friend of mine. He told me of a time when a large church in Alabama wanted him to be their Pastor. He was Pastor of a large church in another state. He and his wife visited the church and met with the search committee. After doing so he told told the committee that he appreciated their hospitality but, he didn’t feel led to become their Pastor. He said, “It takes a special breed of cat to Pastor the church I’m currently serving and I think I am that special breed of cat.” He was saying, “I believe God’s purpose for me is to remain where I am.
Whether you are a full-time vocational Minister or not, God has a purpose for each one of us.
In Ephesians, the apostle Paul said that God gave him the special purpose of taking the gospel to the Gentiles. Paul had been a Jew and Paul had persecuted Christians. He was on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians when he had his great Damascus road experience with the Lord. After he was Paul was converted, God gave Paul the task or the ministry of taking the gospel to the Gentiles. Paul says, “…assuming, by the way, that you know God gave me the special responsibility of extending his grace to you Gentiles.”
In that verse, Paul is sharing with us His purpose in life. Just as God gave my Pastor-friend a purpose and God gave Paul a purpose, God gives us a purpose. First, we are all called to glorify God in all we do. Paul said in I Corinthians 10:31, “Whether then you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
Second, God has given each of us spiritual gifts. God wants us to utilize His gifts in ministry. That may be teaching a Sunday School class or serving in some capacity in the church.
For years, I was a Pastor. I’m not serving a church now. But, I feel God has called me to share the gospel through blog posts and social media. That is part of my purpose in life. God has a purpose for all of us and we will never be happy unless we are fulfilling the purpose God has for us.
Today, determine to glorify God in your life and fulfill His purpose in you.
