The word “scheme” means a plan. In sports, a coach. may say “this is our scheme..” meaning “this is how we plan to play and attack. In business, someone may say, “Be careful with them; it’s my understanding they have a scheme…” So a scheme is a plan.. a method of attack.
In II Corinthians 2, Paul challenged the Christians in Corinth. to be aware of Satan and his evil schemes.” Paul wrote, “… so that Satan will not outsmart us.. for we are familiar with his evil schemes.”
Since the beginning of time, Satan has schemed to cause man to fall. He started in the garden of Eden when he told Adam and Eve they could ignore what God said and take the fruit. The result was that sin came into the world.
Later, Satan caused Cain to become jealous and he rose up and killed his brother Abel because Abel’s offering pleased God more than Cain’s offering did. So, Satan schemes to cause us to trip up and fall.
We all need to be careful of the schemes of Satan. Satan can place wild thoughts in our minds. Satan can make us jealous. Satan knows our weakness and can exploit it. Satan may even whisper in our ear that what we are doing is not wrong… everyone is doing it. Or, Satan may lead us to think that we deserve something because we have gone through a tough time.
Satan is powerful but, God is all-powerful. So, be careful about the schemes of Satan. He will tempt us. He will try to trip us up. But, if we will draw near to God, we can defeat Satan but… only with the strength of God. I John 4:4 says, “Greater is He that is in me than He that is in the world.”
