Have you ever done something and explained it by telling someone, “My conscience was bothering me?” Conscience is defined as “an inner feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one’s behavior.” So our conscience guides us in living. In Acts 24:14 the apostle Paul said “Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and all people.”
Paul was speaking to Ananias and some other Jewish leaders when he said this. He was explaining how he was a follower of The Way which was how Christianity was referred to in first century. He said, “I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and all people.”
That should be our goal as well. How can we maintain a clear conscience before God and all people? We can follow God. We can live by the teachings of Scripture.
And to maintain a clear conscience before all people we should strive to live by the golden rule. So, is your conscience clear before God and all people? It can be; if we live by the commandments of God and treat others the way we would want them to treat us.
