What does it mean to fear the Lord? It means to have reverence for God. To have respect for the things of God. Does it mean we are perfect? No, it doesn’t. But it means we have a desire to honor God. To live for God.
The scripture says those who have a fear of the Lord are filled with joy. “How joyful are those who fear the Lord— all who follow his ways!”
Why is that? It’s not joy that comes from possessions. It’s an inner joy…a joy that comes from following the Lord and believing that doing so, leads to life eternal. It’s a joy that knows that lasting happiness comes from within.
To fear the Lord is to have reverence for God. This reverence for God leads us to walk with God and honor God in our lives. It leads us to make decisions based on a reverence for God.
To fear the Lord is to respect God’s word. When I was a kid, we had a VBS teacher named Bert Panicke. One year in VBS there we’re some books stacked on top of a Bible. Mrs. Panicke told us no book should be placed on the Bible. The Bible should always be on top. That was her way of teaching us respect for God’s word.
“Joyful are those who fear the Lord!”
