There is an old phrase that goes, “Loose lips sink ships.” It refers to the damage that is caused by gossip. Proverbs …says “A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.”
Our tongue is not a huge part of our body yet, it is powerful. It can cause strife. It can separate friends. It can cause a company or business to lose business. It can cause someone to be fired.
On the other hand, the tongue can inspire and give hope. Think of the number of people who have been given hope through a song or a speech.
How are you using your tongue? Do you use it to gossip? To cause strife? Or, do you use it to encourage others?
I knew an individual once who loved to gossip. As I observed this person, it made this individual feel good to be able to tell someone news or info they knew, or thought they knew, about someone else. Their self-esteem was fed through gossip.
Christians, can spread gossip through sharing prayer requests. I have heard someone say something like, “We need to pray for them…they are having some marital problems…etc…”
James said “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell” (James 3:6).
James 3:9 says, “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.”
Today, we all need to guard our tongues.
