The song, “How Great Thou Art,” is one of the most popular Christian songs. The song has been sung by entertainers Carried Underwood and Elvis Presley had a beautiful version of it. For many, when they think of “How Great Thou Art,” they think of George Beverly Shea, a soloist in the Billy Graham crusades.
“How Great Thou Art” is a beautiful old song. This morning, while having my devotional reading, I read Psalm 104:1 in the New Living Translation which reads, “O Lord my God, how great you are!”
That verse spoke to me… I don’t think it is the verse that is the inspiration for the old hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” but, it sounds a lot like it. Today is Sunday… the birds are singing outside… the sun is coming up… This morning there will be worship services online from lots of churches. Some churches may have praise bands while others may only use piano. Some may have special lighting while others have none. Some may show a clip from a video. But let’s set all that aside…
Set aside the praise band…
Set aside the special lighting…
For that matter, you don’t have to use audio-visual equipment…
Let’s not have a choir today…
There is nothing wrong with any of the above if they are used appropriately but, you don’t have to have any of those to worship.
A. person could go stand on their deck or back porch and worship.
A person could be in a boat on a lake, watching the sunrise and worship.
A person could be in a deer-stand and worship.
A person could stand on the beach and watch and listen to the tides come in and worship.
I’m not suggesting that a person needs to skip a worship gathering… I’m just saying you don’t have to have a gathering for worship to happen.
Worship is about Jesus… and how great and loving and powerful Jesus is.
No one has ever loved us like Jesus does. No one will ever love us like Jesus.
As I close, read the lyrics of “How Great Thou Art!”
“O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all, The worlds Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder.
Thy power throughout, the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, My Savior God to Thee!
How Great Thou Art! How Great Thou Art!
Then Sings my soul, My Savior God to Thee!
How great Thou Art! How great Thou art!”
Today, let’s be reminded that worship is about Jesus! Nothing less. It’s about Jesus. Standing on the beach… in the woods… on the lake… on our deck… in a gathering of people.. it’s about Jesus… How great He is!
