“Come Pick Butter Beans With Me”

Back in the nineties, when I was Pastor of Heuck’s Retreat Baptist Church, I was able to spend a lot of time with Bro. Bob Self as he mentored me. One Wednesday he told me that his Dad, who lived in the Mississippi Delta had called and asked him when he was going to come pick butter-beans with him? So, Brother Bob missed the Wednesday night prayer-meeting service to go pick butter-beans with his Dad. But, it wasn’t really about picking butter-beans. The real issue was his Dad wanted his son to come spend some time with him.
When you spend time with someone, that indicates that you like them… you think a lot of them… in some cases, you love them.
That was definitely the case 2,000 years ago. John 1:14 says,”So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”
Notice the words, “He made his home among us..” Jesus left heaven and came to earth and remained on earth thirty-three years. Now, let’s get the picture. Imagine that someone lives in a mansion. They live in a gated community and have everything they want.
But they are watching the news and they see a story of some homeless people who are sleeping under and overpass. They feel for these people so, one day they leave their mansion and go to the site where the homeless people are… and they spend the night with them.
Why do they do it? Because they care for these folks. They left their mansion, their gated community to sleep with people who didn’t have a home.
Jesus left heaven… and came to earth because He loves us. Today, know that as you go about your way, Jesus loves you. He came to earth because He loves us.
