Living the Christian life means living following Jesus. It means following the teachings of Jesus. And one of the areas where the teachings of Jesus is strikingly different from the world is in how we treat others. The world says “Get even!” The world says retaliate…But Jesus taught the opposite.
Jesus teachings about how we are to treat others is best summed up in what is known as “the golden rule.” The golden rule teaches “Do to others as you would like them to do to you” (Lk. 6:31).
In my opinion, this is one of the most important of Jesus teachings. I say that because, how we treat others grows out of our heart. It requires real heart change to do the things Jesus was telling us to do. It isn’t easy to turn the other cheek when someone slaps you. It isn’t easy…in fact it may be tough to pray for your enemies. Everything in you wants to get even! Everything in you wants to ask the Lord to bring the fire down on your enemies! But instead we are to pray for them.
It’s relatively easy to go to church. It’s relatively easy to read your Bible. It may require some sacrifice to give but giving is an individual thing. But how we treat others…that requires changing how we behave.
Today, let’s each of us strive to live by the golden rule and treat others like we would want to be treated.
