When You Are Down To Nothing God Is Up To Something

Who are you counting on this morning? Where us your hope and faith?
Is it in your job? I don’t want to disappoint you but, you can lose your job.
Is it in your education? Again, I don’t want to disappoint you but you can have numerous degrees and not have a job.
Is it in your network? Do you feel like you know some pretty powerful folks and could make a few phone calls and everything would be ok? That network can fail you.
The only person that is reliable for us is the Lord. Psalm 130:5 says, “I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.”
“I am counting on the Lord…” The Psalmist is telling us that his hope and faith are in the Lord… nothing else. There are lots of things we can count . on.. things we can put our hope in, but any person or anything other than the Lord can and will fail us. The only source that will never fail us is the Lord.
Robert Schuller Jr. was Pastor of the Crystal Cathedral in California several years ago. His father, Robert Schuller Sr., built the Crystal Cathedral and had a long-time television ministry. Robert Schuller Jr, followed his Dad as Pastor.
But at some point, he was essentially fired from the position. In his book, “When You Are Down To Nothing, God Is Up To Something,” he writes, “In short, trouble teaches us that God is always up to something in our life.”
Are you down to nothing? Have friends let you down? Have you lost the job you thought you would never lose? When you are down to nothing, God is up to something. Lean on the Lord.
