Why We Have To Put Our Old Lives To Death

When you and I become Christians, our goal is to live for Christ.. to honor Christ in all that we do. But, knowing that and doing that are two different things. We may have good intentions but our old flesh is still active in our lives. Because of that, we may say things we shouldn’t say or do things we shouldn’t do. How can we stop that?
In Colossians 3:5, the apostle Paul wrote, “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.”
Focus on the words, “put to death.” Those are strong words. How do we do that? Every day, as we begin our day, we have to ask the Lord to put our old lives.. our old flesh to death. It has to be killed. And this has to be done every day.
Why? Because although we are Christians, our old flesh is still alive and active. And it often leads us to say things or do things that don’t honor the Lord. It has to be put to death.
In Galations 2:20, Paul said we have to be “crucified with Christ… it is not us who live but the Spirit lives within us..” Every day we have to be crucified with Christ. Every day.
We are all human and we each struggle with sins unique to us. But everyone of us must ask the Lord to put our old sin… our old lives to death.
Maybe you struggle with your tongue. Put it to death.
Maybe you struggle with sexual lust. Every time you see an attractive lady or a handsome man, you have a tendency to have bad thoughts… Put the lust to death.
Maybe you struggle with greed. You always want more money… you never seem to be content. Put the greed to death.
Maybe you struggle with anger… It doesn’t take much to make you angry. Put the anger to death.
Now.. our old sin should bother us. We are human and we will sin.. but it should bother us. If it doesn’t, we need to confess it and ask forgiveness. Our goal should not be to glory in our old sin but to repent of it and have the desire to live for the Lord.
So, today… what old behaviors, attitudes… do we need to ask the Lord to put to death? Whatever it is, do it and live a life that honors the Lord.
