Everyone needs hope. Hope that at some point, things will get better. Hope that better days are on the horizon.
In Isaiah 11, God told Israel there was hope. The nation of Assyria was the dominant power at that time. But Assyria’s reign was coming to an end. It was coming to an end due to the coming of the Messiah.
In Isaiah 11, the Bible says, “Out of the stump of David’s family[e] will grow a shoot— yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.
And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”
The Messiah would have “the Spirit of the Lord…” He would have wisdom and understanding.
Just as their was hope for Israel, there is hope for us. We look at the world and we are concerned. But, one day Jesus is going to return. That gives us hope. In the 1st century, the return of Christ was known as “The Blessed Hope.”
True lasting hope can only be found in Jesus. People will let us down…Jesus never does.
In the movie, “Lonesome Dove,” there is a Texas Ranger named Jake Spoon. Jake has seen Montana and it’s a beautiful country.
So Woodrow Call, another Ranger decides he wants to build a ranch in Montana and he is counting on Jake to show them the way. But Jake begins to waffle.
Woodrow asks Gus if he thinks Jake will go with them. Gus says, “I think Jake is far too leaky a vessel to put much hope in.”
But Jesus doesn’t leak. We can place our hope in Him.
