What the world needs now is love, sweet love..”
You are familiar with that song. It goes on to say, “it’s the only thing that there’s just to little of.” We definitely need more love today. We live at a time when it seems, everyone is at one another’s throats. We are yelling and pointing fingers. If someone disagrees with us it seems, that person becomes public enemy number one.
But Christians are supposed to be different. We are followers of Christ and Jesus taught and practiced love. One of the greatest pieces of literature ever written about love is I Corinthians 13. That chapter is known as “the love chapter.”
Paul ends I Corinthians 12 by saying, “I show you a more excellent way…”. Paul has just discussed the spiritual gifts in chapter 12. And, probably some of the Corinthians were somewhat proud that they had certain gifts. But Paul tells them that there is something greater than the spiritual gifts and it is love.
Every Christian should be marked by love. Does that mean we never speak up? No, it doesn’t. There are times when we must speak up. But, when one considers the totality of our lives, we should be marked by love. Not hatred. Not fighting…but love.
Our Lord said it best; “By this shall the whole world know that you are my disciples, when you love one another” (Jn. 13:34-35).
I encourage you as a believer, to love. Love your fellow man. Love your enemy. Love one another.
Paul said, “But now abide faith, hope and love; but the greatest of these is love.”
