The Key To Happiness

Years ago there was a popular song on the radio that had a nice, easy-going jingle. The song was entitled, “Don’t worry be happy.”
You remember it…
“Don’t worry be happy now…
Oooh, oooh, ooh… don’t worry be happy.”
The song was not complex at all. You could almost say it was a silly little song but, after hearing the song, you find yourself singing it again and again…
The song dealt with something every human being wants – to be happy. But what is the key to happiness?
Well, some would say happiness is found in alcohol. So, if you want to be happy, “grab all the gusto…” Get you a ice-chest full beer and boy you can have fun!!
Others would say happiness is found in getting high… doing drugs.
Others would say it’s found in a trip… or a concert… or a hunting trip… or a round of golf. And there is nothing wrong that but, it doesn’t bring lasting happiness. It may give you a moment or two of happiness but it won’t bring lasting happiness.
So, what gives us lasting, on-going happiness?
Psalms 118:24 says, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
First, if we want to be happy… we need to recognize this day. Some people fail to enjoy this day because they are consumed with the past and others miss today because they are thinking about the future. THIS is the day the Lord has made…
Second, we need to rejoice in this day. “Let us rejoice and be glad in it…” Some days are going to be good days but, as life goes, some days will be bad days. But, we can still rejoice in today. Jesus loves us and provides for us.
Third, we need to redeem this day. One of the best ways any of us can find happiness, is to help someone. When we do that, we are taking our minds off our problems and we are helping someone.
So, this is the day the Lord has made… we can rejoice and be glad in this day. And doing so, brings us lasting happiness.
