Success In The Kingdom Of God

What does it mean to be a success? For most people, it means making lots of money, driving nice automobiles, having a nice home and having a good job with a prestigious title. And, that idea has unfortunately, carried over into the local church. We worship big stuff… big churches… big programs etc…big personalities.
But Jesus said the key to greatness in the Kingdom of God is found in service… just the opposite of what the world thinks is success. In Luke 22:14-34, Jesus says to His disciples, “Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.”
Jesus said, “I am among you as one who serves.”
Jesus was setting the example for His disciples. Greatness was not found in position or title… it’s found in service. Maybe you have a position in the church that to the world, seems kind of small… insignificant… it isn’t to the Lord. Success in God’s eyes is found in serving.
Every Sunday morning, when we walk in the door of Cartersville FBC.. we are greeted by a few folks. Then, we eventually get into the sanctuary. Some may say the guys at the door aren’t very significant when compared to the worship leader or Pastor. Not so! Jesus said success is found in service.
Every Sunday morning, there are some people in Sunday School rooms providing childcare for little children. Some may so those positions aren’t significant. After all; “who wants to work with snotty-nosed kids?” some may think. But Jesus said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me.”
Greatness in the Kingdom of God is found in service.
Back in 1981, I was the new Music and Youth Director at Gillsburg Baptist Church in Osyka, MS . I was young and full of myself. My hero/mentor was a man named Jim Headrick who was the Music and Youth Minister at FBC Kentwood, La. I invited Bro. Jim and his puppet ministry to our church. They did a puppet show and then, we went to the fellowship hall to eat taco’s. .
While the ladies were preparing the food, Bro. Jim and were talking… you know… Minister stuff… serious stuff (:))
Then, Bro. Jim went into the kitchen. Next thing I know, he’s slicing tomatoes for the taco’s. I thought, “Bro. Jim, let the ladies do that stuff… we need to talks serious stuff…”
But God convicted me. Bro. Jim had it right and I had it wrong. Bro. Jim was doing serious ministry stuff… I was the one who had it wrong.
Service is success in the Kingdom of God.
