Dealing With Regrets

Elvis used to sing.. “Regrets… I’ve had a few.”
Everyone has regrets… some more than others but we all have them.
Last night, Holli and I were watching a recent episode of “NCIS.” In one scene, Gibbs is talking to a Professor about the death of his daughter. The Professor says, “the last thing I said to her was, ‘I’m busy, I will call you later.'” The Professor added, “I regret that.”
Then he said, “Regret….”
Gibbs finished the sentence by saying of regret… “Yeah…. it’s a SOB.”
Gibbs was dealing with his own regrets…
I have regrets… If I could go back and re-make some decisions, I would. But I can’t. It’s done. So, how do you handle regrets?
First, if we have sinned, we ask forgiveness for it. I John 1:9 says, “If you confess your sin He is faithful and righteous to forgive your sin and cleanse you of all unrighteousness.”
Second, if you can take some action do it. In other words… if you can go back and do what you should have done, then do it.
Third, if there is nothing you can do… all you can do is move forward. We should learn from our regrets… we should determine to never do that again. The Lord may even use us to use our regrets to advise others.
Zig Ziglar used to say, “You can’t go back and make a new start but, you can start from here and make a new ending.”
Give your regret to the Lord and leave it there.
