We Must “Walk The Walk” And Not Just “Talk The Talk”

Yesterday, we had a situation happen in the store that I work in that really bothered me. It serves as a reminder to us Christians of the need to “walk the walk” and not just “talk the talk.”
A man and woman came in for the man to return a dress-shirt. The man said he had purchased the shirt in our store just a couple of days ago. Our store manager went through his recent purchases and she realized that the shirt this man was trying to return was one he had purchased back in November… well out of our normal return policy.
Seeing this, our manager called me over and said, “They are trying to pull one on us.”
I asked, “What do you mean?”
Then, she showed me what was going on. She went to the people in the store and told them the shirt was out of our normal return policy but, she would honor it this time. Ok, everything is good…
This couple then comes to the counter… somehow religion came up… the man and woman indicated they were very religious and told me the churches they attended. We chatted a little and they left.
Then, it hit me… these people, who were supposed to be “very religious,” had just lied to us. They tried to return a shirt bought back in November of 2018 saying they had purchased it two days earlier.
Now, someone reading this may say, “Hey… I bet this happens all the time.. No big deal.” Except, it was a big deal. Our manager is an agnostic.
And went and found her and told her I was sorry for what just happened. I said,       “Those people were talking a good game but they lied to us.”
She shook her head and said, “That’s one reason I’m agnostic.”
I realize that one hypocritical man and woman shouldn’t lead someone to believe there is no God… I understand that… But my manager has seen lots of that kind of stuff… She even said she had seen it within her family.
Christians, the world is watching us. It’s not enough for us to read our Bibles, go to church and give… we should live our faith… Not in a judgmental maybe preachy way, but genuinely, sincerely. This couple talked to me about their observance of Lent and the church they attend… and at the same time they were lying to us about a return.
Christians, we need to be real. We need to “walk the walk” and not just “talk the talk.”
