This past week, Holli watched “The Crossing.” It’s a movie about George Washington leading his men to cross the Delaware. Jeff Daniels plays the role of George Washington.
Then, one night..I was scrolling through the TV options on Sling and saw the movie “Dumb and Dumber.” I have tried to watch this movie in the past but honestly, it is so silly and ridiculous that I would turn it off. If you like “Dumb and Dumber,” I hope this doesn’t offend you… but I can never watch it.
But this one night, I tried. I don’t think there was anything else on so I tried “Dumb and Dumber.” And we didn’t finish the movie. We turned it off and went to bed.
But, while we were watching it, Holli said, “It’s interesting that the same actor who played George Washington, is playing in “Dumb and Dumber.” She was talking about the actor, Jeff Daniels. She had a point.. and I filed it away.
As I thought about what my wife had said, I though about the word “hypocrite.” The word refers to an actor in a play. An actor plays different roles.
When we think of an hypocrite today, it’s someone who attends worship… maybe even puts on a good spiritual front on Sunday but, during the week, they live like hell. They are a hypocrite.
Now, technically, we are all hypocrites. No Christian is perfect. We all have flaws. So, technically, we are all hypocrites.
But, there are some, who are simply playing the role of Christian. In Matthew 7:5, Jesus said, “You hyprocite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will se clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
As I said earlier, we all have a little hypocrite in us. But, let’s strive to live for Jesus. Let’s not be hypocritical. Be faithful. Live for Christ. Don’t be a play actor and live one way through the week and put on a good show on Sunday’s. And, if you are doing that and thinking you are fooling people, you aren’t, so stop trying. Be real and live for Jesus.
