Today we celebrate the birth of the the United States of America. Our nation is two-hundred-forty-two years old. A very important moment in the formation of our nation reminds us that our founders knew the United States would not make it if not for the divine providence of God.
The Constitutional Convention had been meeting for five weeks, and had hit a perilous deadlock. The large states were insisting that congressional representation be based on population; the smaller states wanted a one-state-one-vote rule. The entire effort to create a stronger union was in jeopardy. Eighty-one-year-old Benjamin Franklin, quiet during most of the deliberations, then addressed the group. According to James Madison’s notes, here is what happened next.
“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the
more convincing proofs I see of this truth- that God Governs in
the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground
without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without
his aid?” (cf belief.net)
God does govern in the affairs of men. I am in complete agreement with the separation of church and state. No one should be told where they have to worship. However, that doesn’t mean that we should ignore the direction of God.
Our nation is facing some great challenges. I believe that many of our problems would be solved if Christians lived our faith as we should. Jesus said we are to be the “salt of the earth and the light of the world.”
Join me today and let’s be a positive influence in our nation. Let’s help people. Let’s pray more. Let’s love one another… Let’s ask God for His power and aid in guiding our nation.
