Several years ago, we were in New Orleans and were walking down Bourbon Street. As we walked past a strip club, a girl was out front calling and trying to entice people to come in. As you can imagine, she had a beautiful figure. She was dressed provocatively. Lots of people would take her up and go in the strip club because it appealed to the lust of the eyes.
Lots of people are not able to resist the temptation. Proverbs 16:25 says ,”There is a way which seems right unto man, but the end thereof is the way of death.”
I’m not suggesting that a strip club brings death… but I am suggesting that a way of life can. Jesus said there are two roads in life; one is the broad way and the other is the straight and narrow. The broad way looks good. It’s appealing to the eyes. It’s a life that requires no sacrifice. It’s motto would be the line from the old beer commercial, “Grab all the gusto you can.”
On the other hand, Jesus talked about the “straight and narrow way.” The “straight and narrow” is a life of sacrifice… a life dedicated to following Jesus. A life of helping others… a life of turning the other cheek… It’s the right way to live but it’s not as appealing as the broad way.
A Christian can have fun. We don’t have to be party-poopers. We don’t have to be against everything that exists. Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
So, you can walk the straight and narrow and still enjoy life. I encourage you to walk that path today.
