Helping Others

The Beatles had a song that went;

“Help! I need somebody! Help I need someone!”

They also had a song that went;

“I get by with a little help from my friends..”

All of us need help at times. Maybe we just need someone to open a door for us because our hands are full. Or, maybe we need to borrow someone’s jumper cables for help in jumping our vehicle off.
Jesus taught us, in the parable of the Good Samaritan, that we are to help anyone in need. It doesn’t matter what color they are or what socio-economic status they are… we are to help.
In Exodus 23:4-5, the people of Israel were told, “If you come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has strayed away, take it back to its owner. If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has collapsed under its load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and help.”
“Stop and help…” As Christians, we are to help one another. If we see someone in need, we are to help.
What keeps us from helping more? Most of the time, it’s because we are busy. Maybe we see someone who needs help and we are moved to help them but, we are running late and don’t think we have the time.
Maybe you see someone in need and you want to help them but you don’t have any money on you.
We all need to slow down enough to help others if we can. James said if we see someone in need and we say to them, “Go you way, be warmed and be filled” we haven’t accomplished anything. We need to help others.
So today and from this point forward… when you see someone in need, if you have the means to do it, help them. That’s living the Christian life.
