Jesus Said Service Is The Key To Success In The Christian Life

Mother Teresa was an Albanian born Roman Catholic nun and missionary. 1950 Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation which had over 4,500 sisters and was active in 133 countries in 2012. Mother Teresa was known for service…. the Missionaries of Charity managed homes people dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; dispensaries and mobile clinics; children’s- and family-counseling programs; orphanages, and schools. Members, who take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, also profess a fourth vow: to give “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor”. (cf Wikipedia)
Mother Teresa is known for service… Although our society respects her, many people equate success with honors or a nice title or position and good salaries. While there is nothing wrong with those, those are not the marks of success in the Christian life. Jesus taught us that the Christian life is marked by service.
In Matthew 20, the mother of James and John, two of the disciples, came to Jesus with her sons. She asked Jesus if, when He came in His kingdom, He would allow her two sons to sit in places of honor on His right and on His left? Jesus said to her, “You don’t know what you are asking for.” Then He added, “Are you able to drink the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?”
They replied, “Oh yes, we are able!”
Then Jesus said, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. but I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen”
When the other disciples heard what James and John were asking for they became angry. But Jesus gathered His disciples and told them, “…the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Think about that last sentence… “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom….”
Success in the Christian life is not a title or a position or a big salary or a big church… success is found in service to others. Jesus said, “I came not to be served but to serve others.” Today, focus on service…and we will be more like Jesus.
